Skills and Competencies of Psychologists

Psychologists are highly trained professionals with expertise in the areas of human behaviour, mental health assessment, diagnosis and treatment, and behaviour change. Psychologists work with clients to change their feelings and attitudes and help them develop healthier, more effective patterns of behaviour. Psychologists apply scientifically validated procedures to help people change their thoughts, emotions and behaviours. Psychotherapy is a collaborative effort between an individual and a psychologist. It provides a supportive environment to talk openly and confidentially about concerns and feelings.
Psychologists are trained in the delivery of a range of techniques and therapies with demonstrated effectiveness in treating mental health disorders. They are specialists in applying psychological theory and scientific research to solve complex problems requiring individually tailored interventions.

Most psychologists develop expertise in specific areas, or practice in sub-specialisations of psychology. They provide a wide range of psychological services to individuals across the lifespan and for mental health conditions that range from mild to severe. In addition to professional practice, psychologists may be involved in training and supervision, program development and evaluation, and other activities that promote psychological health in individuals, families, groups, and organisations.
